DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Hamden Owner’s Guide

A DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Hamden typically runs $1,800 to $3,400 installed, depending on chimney height and whether the existing liner pulls out clean or has to be cut out in sections. We stock DuraFlex-compatible replacement liner on every truck, and most Hamden replacements are completed in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem during a routine sweep when our camera shows cracked, separated, or rusted-through stainless - or when they smell smoke in an upstairs bedroom during a hard January wind off the Quinnipiac Valley.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex produces several liner series, and the replacement protocol differs by what is currently in your chimney. The DuraFlex SW (smooth wall) and DuraFlex HT (high-temperature) are the two we encounter most often in Hamden’s older housing stock, particularly the colonials and cape cods built between 1950 and 1980 near Ridge Road and the Mount Carmel area. Both use 316Ti stainless steel, but the HT carries a higher temperature rating for wood-stove and fireplace-insert applications.

To identify your liner, check the termination cap for a stamped label, or have us drop a camera and read the collar marking from inside. If the label is gone, we measure inner diameter and wall thickness - DuraFlex SW runs .005 to .007 inch thicker than economy liners, and the seam pattern is distinct. We are an independent service provider with no affiliation to DuraFlex, but we source OEM DuraFlex replacement sections and also carry HeatShield and Gelco equivalents where they match the spec and save the homeowner money without compromising the job.

The gotcha in Hamden: some 1980s installations used DuraFlex transition adapters that are now discontinued. We fabricate compatible transitions on-site when needed, or source from Famco and Copperfield where their specs align. We will not sell you a liner that does not mate to your existing appliance connection. That is a callback we have no interest in making.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

  • Smoke or creosote odor in upstairs rooms. A split seam or separated joint in the DuraFlex liner allows exhaust to leak into the chimney cavity, then find paths through framing gaps. In Hamden’s older homes with balloon framing, this travels fast. We find this most often after freeze-thaw cycles have worked a joint loose.
  • White or orange staining on exterior brick. This is condensate and creosote weeping through mortar joints because the liner is no longer drafting hot enough to keep moisture moving up and out. The DuraFlex liner may be intact but undersized for the appliance, or it may have collapsed inward and restricted flow.
  • Chunks of stainless steel in the cleanout. DuraFlex liner does not shed material unless it has failed structurally. Those flakes are usually from corrosion at the flex points where the liner bends to enter the smoke chamber. Hamden’s proximity to Long Island Sound means salt air accelerates this at the top of the stack.
  • Visible gaps or daylight through the liner wall during camera inspection. The DuraFlex corrugated design creates stress points at each corrugation valley. After 15 to 25 years of thermal cycling, these develop pinholes that widen. Our camera catches them before they become blowouts.
  • Deteriorating mortar between flue tiles with a DuraFlex liner supposedly in place. Sometimes the original clay liner was left in place and the DuraFlex was never fully inserted, or it has slipped down and exposed the old tile. Either way, the system is not protected and needs proper replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Component Typical Range in Hamden
DuraFlex-compatible liner (20-25 ft, standard diameter) $900 - $1,600
Insulation wrap (required by CT code for unlined exterior chimneys) $200 - $400
Top plate, rain cap, and connection hardware $250 - $450
Labor: removal, installation, and testing $450 - $950
Total installed $1,800 - $3,400

What drives the range: chimney height above the roofline, whether the existing liner pulls out in one piece or has to be sectioned and extracted, and whether the appliance connection needs modification. Two-story colonials near Hamden’s West Woods Road area with steep pitches run toward the higher end. Ranch-style homes with straight vertical runs tend toward the lower. We give you the full number before we start. The estimate is the invoice.

Every replacement includes our Level-2 camera inspection before and after, photos you keep, and the 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If it is not right, we come back. No paperwork to dig up, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There is a safe middle ground here, and then there is where DIY stops. You can verify your chimney height with a tape measure from the roof, check the appliance collar diameter, and photograph any visible label on the existing liner. That information saves us time and saves you money.

What you should not do: climb a steep roof to pull a liner, work with incomplete combustion knowledge, or guess at clearances to combustibles. Connecticut code requires proper insulation and listed connectors; an uninsulated liner in an exterior chimney can cool flue gases enough to cause creosote buildup and chimney fire conditions. We have also seen homeowners install the right liner but upside-down, with the corrugations reversed, destroying draft. If it’s there, I’ll find it. If it doesn’t need fixing, I’ll tell you that too. Call (475) 369-1614 and we will walk through what you are seeing.
